We want to deploy email access via a Pocket PC phone (such as the Samsung
i730 on Verizon's EVDO broadband network) via a standard SBS 2003 install,
but have no experience with this topic.
I have two questions:
1.) Verizon tells me that a Pocket PC phone (or Windows Mobile Smartphone)
can access email via Exchange 2003 (in SBS 03) via the standard Exchange
setup. No special config on the server. Is this true?
2.) One of my business accociates claims that there is better reat-time
email access via a Blackberry ("push email"???) than a Pocket PC phone.
What, if any, is that advantage of the Blackberry?
Thanks,

The Samsung is a very interesting phone with the EVDO. I am currently
using the Audiovox SMT5600 on Tmobile. I like the phone and features,
but the Tmobile service and GPRS data speed are marginal. Yet, the
contacts, calendar, email, mp3, etc make up for any difficiencies. I
am looking at the Samsung for a possible upgrade.
1) Yes, the Smartphones work with Exchange 2003 including SBS. The
setup is made easier by a wizard on the MS site in the mobile section.
Also, you can check the smartphone newsgroup for additional info.
2) Blackberry does seem to deliver email in more realtime. My SMT5600
phone will check for email every 5 minutes (good enough for me). With
a BB, the desktop redirector software needs to installed on a client
(ie. your desktop) which means more administration, particularly in
large deployments and only sends email to the BB (the Smartphone will
sync). OR you can use the Blackberry Enterprise Server which starts at
$1500 for a Small Business version (5 users) which provides sync (ie.
you delete on BB, it deletes from your mailbox, as far as I know).

Windows Mobile is the way to go. If you're getting a device now, try and get
one that will upgrade to WM 5.
