Anyone ever see an odd entry in My Network Places for a domain that doesn't
exist? this is a single domain structure with nt4 domain controllers and
there is an xp client that appears as a domain/workgroup. I found a wins
record a few weeks back referring to this machine and deleted it.

The domain/workgroup name shows up as xivan with a little square next to it??

XP home or pro? I take it the machine isn't a member
of your domain? The XP machine is either registering
its machine name as the domain/workgroup or, if its
another domain it's registering that name. Deleting the
record / records should remove the name from the
browse list after at least 51 minutes. What happens if
you double click on the name?

The machine is xp pro. The name of the machine is not what I see as the
domain name.
So the name of the machine is pankov and there use to be a wins record that
was named xivan so I am guessing that the machine name use to be ivan before
I started here. I renamed it and that didn't do it, I deleted the wins
record and that didn't do it either.
I was going to try removing it from the domain and then adding it back again?
If you double click on that domain name through network places it just
fails, you can't view any of the information associated with it.
I stopped the computer browser service on the machine to.

thanks,

The machine is now a member of your domain?
Open server manager and click on view then put
a check mark next to "show domain members
only"; do you still see the name in the list? If so
then you haven't removed the machine account
from server manager. Server manager uses the
browse list to enumerate the list by default but
"show domain members only" pulls the name from
the SAM database.

Basically what happened is I started working on this issue and found a WINS
record that was XIVAN and that record belonged to a client that was a member
of the domain as I tracked it down through dhcp.
I went to the machine and found that all the nic settings, machine stuff was
all fine.
Then I renamed the machine and the weird entry in network places appeared to
go away.
It is back and there is no trace of where it is coming from.
I haven't tried taking the machine out of the domain and then deleting it
from server manager and then rejoining the machine with even a new name.
I just checked server manager and the old name isn't there no matter which
view it is. I suspect that originally another IT tech joined the machine to
the network and the machine name was IVAN and I think that wins is adding the
X in front and that is why it appears in network places as XIVAN with a
little square next to it.

This is a single domain environment which has 1 domain
and is not segmented?
