Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>migration (more info?)

I have been using 4 Xp Pro computers witha total of 12 users in a
peer-to-peer network. I just bought a server with Server 2003. I
created a user on the server and when I login the user on the Xp
computer it creates a duplicate user with the domain attached ( if the
user was Joe I get a user joe and a user joe.rds1). It does not have
all the user files etc. Is there a way to get the user account to move
so the original files and profile stuff are the same as they were?

thanks

that is because its creating a domain profile on the local machine. The other profile is the previous local profile. If you want to keep the settings from the old profile rename it to joe.local reboot. logon as administrator. delete the domain copy. then log off and logon with your domain user so it creates a new copy. log off straight away. then log on as local administrator. rename the newly created profile to joe.domain and rename the joe.local to the profile name eg: joe. Then log off from administrator(dont reboot) then logon as joe and all your settings will be there. Then you can delete the other copy. Its long winded way around it. But i found if you reboot it will recreate the domain copy of the profile. Other option is to use roaming profiles and just copy the whole profile except the local settings folder to the profile share on the server.

Hope it helps

Andrew

When you install Windows Server 2003 it needs to be activated just like XP and Vista do. When you buy the operating system it will usually comes with 5 user licenses. If you plan on using it as an application server (Terminal Services) those 5 licenses do NOT mean you can connect up to 5 users to the server. You still need to purchase Terminal Services User Licences for every user you plan on connecting. Those 5 licenses that came with the operating system are Windows licenses. So let's say you have 10 users that need to connect. You then need 10 user licenses AND 10 terminal services user licenses for a total of 20 licenses for your 10 users. Confused yet? Well it gets better.
