Can someone give me insight into this error message (below)? I started
getting this in my Server Performance Report every day on SBS 2003.
With only one occurrence, it doesn't seem to be a major problem, and
WSUS is working fine, but I'm just curious...

Source: Windows Server Update Services
Event ID 421
Last Occurence: 3/15/2006 5:33 AM

Hi,

When I check the event log there a loads of Event 421 errors

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows Server Update Services
Event Category: Update Services Service
Event ID: 421
Date: 12/12/2007
Time: 14:32:30
User: N/A
Computer: SERVERNAME
Description:
Connection to database failed. Reason=SQL Server does not exist or
access denied.. Connection string: Data Source=SERVERNAME\WSUS;Initial
Catalog=SUSDB;Connection Timeout=60;Application Name=WSUS SQL

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Any ideas?

The most likely cause is that the account you are logged in with is not a
member of the Administrators, or WSUS Administrators, group on the WSUS
Server, thus is being denied access.

Lawrence,

Thanks for your input but.....

The user account used has full domain admin rights. I have even tried
to launch the Wsus Admin Console whilst logged onto the server and
receive the same error message....

Connection to database failed. Reason=SQL Server does not exist or
> access denied..

and an associated error appears in the event log.
All other Wsus2.0 servers are behaving as expected.

All ideas appreciated

Ironically, being a member of DOMAIN\Domain Admins guarantees nothing.

In this case, verify that DOMAIN\Domain Admins is, in fact, a member of the
BUILTIN\Administrators group on the WSUS Administrator. I know that it's a
common practice to remove DOMAIN\Domain Admins from that group, and it's not
uncommon for this to be the cause of this particular behavior.

Of course, this additional information is useful, and could indicate a
number of other issues with accounts and/or permissions, including
unexpected changes to permissions or passwords on the IUSR_Machinename
account, the IWAM_Machinename account, the NTAUTHORITY\Network Service
account, or the NTAUTHORITY\Local System account - any of that sound
familair?

Could also be that the database service is stopped. Have you verified that
the database server is accessible, in general?
