Post subject: Symantec System Center Console on SBS 2003
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>sbs (more info?)

I posted this on a Symantec newsgroup, but thought I might get some insight
here...

We have a new Small Business Server 2003, running the Corporate Edition v.10
of Symantec AntiVirus. It is in a managed setup, with the console installed
on the server. After restarting the server, access to the SSCC is fine.
However, after a while -- perhaps a few hours, up to a day -- the SSCC fails
to open (the hourglass flickers for a second, then nothing happens). If you
look in the Task Manager, "mmc" is running, but the SSCC never opened. I
verified through Services that the follow services are all automatic, and
running:

Symantec AntiVirus
Symantec AntiVirus Definition Watcher
Symantec Event Manager
Symantec Settings Manager
Symantec System Center Discovery Service

Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions as to what is going on, and how I can
open the SSCC without restarting the server all the time?

Thanks.

Corey

Corey, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the SSCC?

We run many SAV installs and have not seen this problem. A couple of thoughts:

- uninstall all of the parts
- run nonav (on the cdrom in the tools directory)
- download and install the latest version from the fileconnect website

If you're running 10.2, uninstall it and install 10.0 or 10.1, not
10.1.5. I've had to remove the 10.2 (installs on 2003 as 10.1.5) on
every server/network because of profile corruptions and lockups.

Symantec just sent me the Symantec EndPoint Protection as a replacement
for 10.x Corporate Edition (shows as version 11 now) and it's different.
I'm about to install SEPP on the same servers where 10.2 was locking up.

Interesting. I've got Corporate Edition 10.2 (10.1.5) running on 3 small SBS
client networks with no problems that I can detect.

Thanks for the replies. We're running 10.0. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the SSC, but still saw the same issue afterwards. I have opened
a case with Symantec; we'll see if I get help there.

Thanks.

Just installed Symantec Endpoint Protection (11) and found that every
laptop with an Artheos (spelling) card would not maintain a connection.
If we disable AV protection it works fine, enable it again and it dies -
disabled all Network protection of AV and left it enabled and it's still
killing the wireless. Removed SEPP and installed 10.0 or 10.1 and it
works fine again

Symantec had me download and install 10.1.6.6000 (downloaded as 10.2,
installed as 10.1.6.6000), and that seems to have taken care of the issue.

Thanks to all who replied.

Are you aware that if you have maintenance that you get Symantec
EndPoint Protection now - this is the new version of Symantec Corp Ed
for W/S - I had a LOT of problems on a couple toshiba laptops, but none
of the workstations are showing problems.
