I have asked this earlier, but the only response was to ask further questions
and then ignore the answers, so here is the story.
Server has single NIC (second one to hand but not installed till this
problem is solved), plus a router. It has worked stably for several months.
Since Friday, and without maknig any changes I can still ping the any client
on our network by name or IP address but can only ping external addresses by
IP address. I can RWW inwards and access server and clients. We cannot use
IE, and our email is now being sent by reconfiguration of the pop and smtp
names to IP address
I have carried out the following tests
ipconfig /renew on the server returns
-----

The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for
this operation.

In Device Manager, when you click Show Hidden Devices, is the TCP/IP Protocol
Driver listed as disabled under Non-Plug and Play drivers, and/or do you
receive error code 24????

Ian,
I think there is trouble with your DHCP server?
Try this: in command prompt (go to 'START', 'RUN', type CMD and press enter)
type ipconfig /renew
What happens?

Ian, since you can RWW inwards and ping external addresses your TCP/IP stack
is working. I think that the problem is with the DNS server configuration in
your SBS box. This can be further narrowed down. If you can access the
server normally, including RWW, the DNS server is working. But something
else is wrong in its conviguration. The most telling symptom is that you can
"only ping external addresses by IP addresses". In order to access the
internet your SBS DNS server must be able to query an external DNS server,
but my bet is that the server it is currently looks at went out of business,
or is malfunctioning.
You need to get from your ISP a valid DNS IP address (or use a known good
one somewhere on the internet), or, even better, IP addresses for two valid
DNS servers, then run CEICW and at the appropriate place plug in those
addresses. ISPs will typically provide their customers with at least 2 DNS
server addresses, the second of which is the failover for the first one.
Something like this happened to me a while back with a NAT/router when I had
forgotten about an email from the ISP about a change in DNS servers, and the
one remaining valid DNS server address in my configuration kept working
until the day it was down. I then of course lost ability to surf, until I
realized that the backup DNS IP was out of date.

oops - just read that you have already done that. D'oh!!!
Are you using a software firewall, or hardware? If it is software, have you
tried a temp disable of the software and seeing if this solves the problem
after restarting the client machines?

Hello
Thanks for the suggestion, I have spoken with my ISP and the DNS are
correct. When I try a ipconfig /flushdns I get an error. Does that give any
additional ideas?
Thanks

A couple of things to try:
a) connect a computer to the router (or whatever device) in place of the
SBS, does it work now?
b) run CEICW and remove the ISPs DNS forwarder entries (leave them blank) so
root hints are used. Does it work now?
I presume your internet connection comes into a hub or switch, and your
server and client computers are connected there as well, is this correct?
What device is between the internet and this hub/switch? Does the device
have a configuration interface? Does it pick up network settings from the
ISP automatically? What is it's status (IP, gateway, DNS, and connection?)

Les, you are undoubtedly a wonder.
the b) option worked straight off.
Actually the router is a 4 port switch which is itself linked to the 16 port
switch serving the remaining clients (including the server). I do have it
set to automaticaly select the ISP DNS servers rather than giving their
addesses
Anyway after frustrating 5 days, the team here say thanks to you, now they
can get on with their job, and I am already less crusty
Best regards

That indicates a problem with your ISPs DNS server(s).
One thing I have learned about SBS .... If it's an internet connectivity
issue that suddenly appears - suspect your ISP first.
