Hi,

I just discovered that SBS get's very angry when you try to put two
machines running it on the same network.

Is there no acceptable way to do this?

Obviously, if you follow the default, you have two machines on two
different domains. That really doesn't qualify as being on the same
network as SBS prevents trusts between the domains. (as far as I can
tell)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ed

My actual goal is to replace the aging finance server on the network
with the new sbs server.
I already have a sbs server which is a DC and exchange server and I
don't want to change this.

I don't have two companies and I don't want two domains.
I don't want the financial server to be a DC.

It seems as though the first thing Microsoft or any vendor such as Dell
should ask when you go to buy this is, Do you have another SBS server
on your network, if so don't even think about buying this because we
have crippled it's ability to interoperate with another SBS server and
there is no way around it. Also, don't buy this if you want to be in an
environment without a domain, because we have crippled the software and
it will not work.

Basically they are saying, you can get a reasonable deal on one and
only one sever software package for your network.

Now back to Dell and the finance software consulting house which
endorsed a non DC SBS server as a acceptable solution for the new
software on a new machine.
Just won't work.

Ed

I realized before that I didn't need two, but I didn't receive any info
from Microsoft, Dell, or the Finance software vendor and consultant
that I couldn't run two.

I got it because it was more reasonably priced for my non-profit 50
user client than server 2003.

I'm not trying to imply that SBS is not a good deal, what I'm saying is
forcing a small business to only be able to use 1 is not a good deal.
All but the smallest companies will end up needing more than one server
on their network, especially if the primary is a DC and an exchange
server and DNS and DHCP, etc...

Thanks for the replies,

Ed

They will get mad. So will DHCP. If you have a need for two SBS servers (as
in, you have two different companies on your network/in your office)
separate the networks with a router.

Actually, yes - SBS is an incredibly good deal Smile.

If you could run more than one SBS on the same network, then everybody would
do just that. Therefore, there are restrictions.

If your goal is to replace the Finance server (which is presently *not* your
SBS server) then do just that. Use Windows Server, not SBS.

You simply have the wrong server product - you not only can't run two SBS,
but you also don't need two.

Then you can't run it on SBS at all.

This is why you need to make sure you know what you are asking to buy, and
have done some research first. Salespeople are not techs, but frankly, if I
were a salesperson, I'm not sure it would occur to me to ask if you already
had an SBS server....frankly, if you had one already, I'd expect you to be
aware that you can't have more than one on your network. It's always been
this way.

Yes; it's sort of a "starter kit" to an AD/Exchange environment. You might
check out www.techsoup.org for nonprofit purchasing....

Not true; that's what SBS is meant for - small companies. I have many small
companies running SBS with a single server. When they need another server,
they buy W2003.

Hi,
You could see if your router supports vlans and create two separate
subnets. I run 2 out of the 4 ports on my home router to my sbs network
and 2 ports for customer builds etc. SBS likes to be the dhcp/dns/wins
etc server for the network it is on, I can't see how you could overcome
this from my limited experience in SBS.
