We have SBS 2003 installed on our server with AVAST! for a security system.
We are not happy with this and want to change to Norton Security but need to
be sure that it is completely compatible with the server software, we have
heard conflicting stories. Is it?

Hi,

You haven't said which Norton product specifically but there isn't a Norton
product that will protect a server. Do you mean Symantec perhaps ? A few
people here use Symantec products on their SBS boxes and are quite happy with
it. Others will recommend Trend, Sophos etc. You need a proper Exchange aware
product on your SBS box.

Regards Colin.

I was speaking of Symantec - I started using Norton first so that is what I
have continued to call it by. Exchange aware product? I am not sure
what that means. I got drafted into this job and am learning as I go.

An Exchange AV will scan messages for viruses. Your normal AV won't scan
inside the messages.

Friends don't let friends use software that comes in a yellow box. And I
think you must mean Symantec corporate AV, not Norton (the latter is for
home users).

I think you'll find that most SBS folk prefer TrendMicro. Try their 30-day
eval of the Worry Free Business Security (Advanced) suite.

Eh, I've generally been happy with Symantec corporate AV. Norton....another
story. But to answer the question as asked, symantec's corporate AV is
perfectly compatible with SBS. I've used 8, 9, 10, and 11 without problems.
(well....one problem with one specific point revision of 10, but that's
another story...)

Actually, Symantec Corporate Edition or Symantec End Point Protection
run fine on SBS 2003 and have no issues. I've used it on MANY servers
and so far we've never had a compromised network/server on any of the
managed clients. I will stick with Symantec Corporate over other
products until I see something better.

For email scanning, we use the Firewall UTM services to remove ANYTHING
that could be executed and AV scan documents at the firewall before they
reach the network.

I agree. I have been using Symantec for over 4 years now on all my clients
servers and have had no security issues.

The current product you want is Symantec Multi-Tier Protection (v. 11.0.2)
and by using the following Symantec part number your distribution company
will help you out...
13909768

BTW, the new product also includes Anti Spam!

The base line installation of Small Business Server 2003 provides for a lot of customization. This is especially important because you can then continue adding value and selling more services to your clients. Essentially, Small Business Server 2003 allows you to build on the investment that your clients have already made.

Install anti-virus software such as Trend Micro or Symantec's
Norton Anti-Virus. Many are designed to prevent this kind of
malicious software, or "Malware." More importantly, make sure
your subscription for new virus patterns is current and
configured to automatically download and install updates
