Hello,
A recent problem has surfaced:
- When a new user logs onto a workstation in the BNE site (using the BNE DC)
- the user does not receive a roaming profile and errors are displayed.
- The Home directory is created successfully.
Our network:
Windows 2003 Server SP1
Clients = Windows XP Pro SP2
Active Directory network
Four DC's in the network- MEL1, MEL2, SYD, BNE, across four sites
We create a user in the following way:
1. Open Active Directory
2. right click on Organizational Unit BNE and select new user
3. Enter user details
4. Set Password
5. Select exchange server
6. Once created right click on user and go to properties and select Profile
tab
7. Under profile path enter: \\servername\Profiles\%USERNAME%
8. Under Home folder; Select H: and Connect to: \\servername\Home\%USERNAME%
9. Click apply and ok
Reviewing the properties of the use shows that the %USERNAME% is replaced by
the user's correct login
When logging on to a pc for the first time, and every subsequent attempt,
the user is shown two windows error messages.
1. "Windows cannot locate your roaming profile and is attempting to log you
on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be propagated to
the server."
2. "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a
temporary profile. Changes to your profile will be lost when you log off."
The local profile is C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP...
Note that all other users can access their existing roaming profiles.
The problem occurs on all PC's, both at the site and when logging in at
other sites.
Any assistance would be welcome.
cheers,

Hi Mathieu,
Thanks for the reply.
In response to your questions:
1. We only see the Access-Denied error in the error log, related to the
on-screen error number 1 below.
2. The server hosting the remote profile is local.
We have tried logging in froma remote site, as well.
This only occurs for new users- users that had already been created before
the problem arose do not have this problem.
Also, new users do have access to their Exchange mailboxes, only the roaming
profile is a problem.
Kind regards,
IT@C

From a user that has the problem,
can it manually create its own roaming folder ?
mkdir \\server\share\myprofile

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
yes, the user can create its own folder and subfolders.
e.g.
mkdir \\server\share\myprofile
mkdir \\server\share\myprofile\test
and also
mkdir \\server\share\myprofile2
This is all very odd.
cheers,

When you enter the path for the user profile and apply, if you check the profile folder, you will find that the sub folder has not been created.
However, if you set the path for the Home folder and apply, the sub folder in the Home directory has been created.
If you create a new user, do not set a roaming profile on AD, you will find that when you log on to a client pc for the first time, it will then create a local profile.
Now here's the thing. If you go back to the beginning, set the path for the profile. i.e.
\\server\profiles\%username% - and then set the path for the home folder. i.e. \\server\profiles\%username% - apply. voila, you will then find the required sub folder has been created in the Profile directory. Go back to the user properties, overtype profiles with Home (or whatever you name your personal folder directory with), and then your Home folder will then be created.
Log on as the user on the client machine and a local profile with then be created which will then down load to the server on log out.
I don't know why the sub folder isn't created in the 'Profile' section but it does in the 'Home' section. If anyone know the answer, please let me know.

Hello k,
If you have problems please describe them in detail and if something happens
before, like crashes, new patches or updates etc. Also open a new posting
for your problem. The one you are referring to is from 03/2008. Think this
will not longer be monitored from the OP. Do not forget the OS you are using.
