Post subject: Problems Migrating User Profiles, Moving Clients to New Domain
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>migration (more info?)

Old System: NT domain, 10 clients, local profiles.

Proposed Solution:

- Bring a Win2K3 server online, pre-stage new user accounts
- Log into the new domain with new accounts.
- Log in as admin and copy old profile directory to new profile directory
created in Docs and Settings.

(This all went well to this point. I should have remembered to clear out
temp files and IE cache and history. No need to transfer that stuff.)

I noticed some problems. Users couldn't save any part of their profiles, or
make local policy changes stick. For instance, they couldn't select a new
screen saver. There is a default domain policy in effect, but besides
password settings, nothing was added to lock users down.

I decided to "take ownership" of the new profile directories at each client
workstation, logged in as the users. This seemed to work. Changes could be
made, et al.

But the user's main drives (i.e. the "C" partitions) are jacked up. Do I
need to allow them to take ownership of those as well?

Also, I've noticed that in the security tab of the properties on a
file/folder object, the GUID of the user appears automatically, but it takes
about 30 seconds for the GUID to be resolved into a domain name\user pair.
What could be the cause of this slow-down? Win2K3 Server???

Thanks,

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your posting here.

As for the C: partition on client computer, in general we set the local
administrators group as the default owner.

Are these GUIDs for the users in current domain or the original NT domain?
Do you point the clients to the same internal DNS server as your Windows
2003 domain controller?
Does the problem occur on domain controller?

I would like to suggest that you add a new user account in the permissions
list of a folder. Is it still displayed slowly?

Thanks, Bob

In answer to your questions... The GUIDs are for users in the current
domain.

This cleint does not point to the internal DNS server, aka my W2K3 DC with
an ADI-zone. I will make that change and see if any changes are seen.

The problems are seen on the client machines. Once again, the problem
appears to be that the user logged into the domain, on his cleint machine,
can't do anything: Can't run programs because he doesn't have the
permissions to create new files in the temp directories or even the program
directories. I've tried all sorts of things. I added the user to the
Administrators group and the Domain Admins group in his account on the DC.
I've also made him the owner of the C: drive and well as explictly given his
ownership to his profile directory.

I'll try the last thing (add a new user permission to a folder and see how
long it takes) in a bit...

Thanks again...

Thanks for your update.

The client needs to contact the DC to resolved the SIDs in permissions
list. You do not need to add the users in domain admins group, you can just
logon the client as local administrator and add the domain user account in
Local Administrators group on the client.

Have a nice day!
