We have this nasty problem with pdf-files: when a user on our Terminal
Server 2003 r2 prints a pdf (with the advanced feature "Print as image" not
enabled) _from_ it's Outlook client, one of these Z@??.tmp files won't be
deleted anymore. I've tested this on both a Windows 2000 as a 2003 r2
Terminal Server, with various versions of Acrobat Reader version 5.0.5 -
7.0.8 and both Office 2000 as Office 2003... Al the same.
The problem the user experiences is the next day when (s)he tries to login
and a part of their local settings are gone, like the quick launch and
e-mail signature. That is caused because the local profile of the user on
the TS isn't completely cleaned up. These .tmp-files can't be deleted
without rebooting the server, it appears to me like they're being registered
as "in use" but that actually no one or a false identifier is using these
files.
The only thing i can do now is every day cleaning up de local "Documents and
Folders"-folder to see if there are user profiles that are corrupted in this
way. Then i move them to another folder (i can't delete these folders that
contain these tmp-files) and after i rebooted the server after some Windows
Updates i delete this folder.
First i thought it was a specific problem of the printer driver of Konika
Minolta but as it appears now, it really has something to do with printing
more in general. These tmp-files are also created with other drivers.
Any help is really appreciated.

I'd first install the User Profile Hive Cleanup service from MS - a good
thing to run anywhere.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912...18-B570
and also post in a TS group. You might also test whether the problem happens
outside of TS (as in, a domain member XP Pro box on which you have
Outlook/Acrobat, etc).... >> Stay informed about: Printing a PDF from Outlook causes Z@??.tmp files to occur.. |

Hi Lanwench,
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, that one isn't capable of deleting
these files, the UPHC is in place (latest and greatest). It feels like the
files are marked like being in use and the owner of this usage is gone, not
to be found by Windows whereafter Windows decides safely and not delete the
files.
As we had this on both our Windows/Office 2000 as Windows/Office 2003
environment i appears to me a more common problem but strangely enough i
can't find much about this.
Regards, Hans.

And does it happen on a WinXP Pro box joined to the domain (as opposed to
working in TS)?
Anything useful in the event logs?
If all you need is a reader, you might try Foxit instead - it's much leaner
than anything Adobe makes. And, it's also free.

Hi Lanwench,
This happens on the TS, in the roaming user profile:
C:\Documents and settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp\a\
Where the last letter varies. Nothing appears in the event log. There are no
open files shown in the computer management console and even when i purge
the printer the files stays stuck.
I'll take a look at foxit... Ah yeah!!! Go baby go!!! Sorry for being so
happy, but this shitty thing haunted me now for months and with Foxit it
appears to be gone!! It's almost to good to be true, so for now i'll wait
for what happens the next week but for now it looks veeeerry promising.
Thanks again.
