Post subject: Print Server Migration
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>migration (more info?)

I am trying to consolidate our print servers as well as take some older
servers offline. These servers are all either Windows 2000 or 2003. I can
use the Print Migration tool to move the printers, drivers, queues, etc. to
the new server but my problem is with the clients.

Is there a way to somehow automatically redirect printers setup on client
computer to the new print server? Because I am consolidating (and we have a
new server naming scheme) I cannot name the new server the same as the old.
I have tried modifying DNS to "trick" the clients to going to the new server,
but I get a "could not authenticate" error.

We have many client computers that this will affect and it would be a HUGE
task to try to reinstall the printers manually. Is there any easy way to
automate this somehow? You would think that MS puts out a migration tool
that they would find a way to migrate the client settings as well...

Thank you for your help.

Jason

Hi,

I'm afraid there is no such method to control a client side behavior to
redirect the printer unless you use script.

Regarding script solution, I'd like to suggest you post at MSDN newsgroup
for assistance.

Thanks.

you can script this easily with a .bat or .vbs file

type "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /?" at a command window to get the
syntax for .bat or here is the .vbs way

set oNet = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
oNet.RemovePrinterConnection "\\server\share"
oNet.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\server\share"

make sure the server and share part is in quotes (just incase this post
takes them out as if it were a link).
