One of the users wants to make phone calls directly from outlook contacts and
uses different calling cards for different places as different calling cards
offer differerent call rates. How would anyone achieve it, please advice
required hardware, software and the way to setup as we all are novice users,
thank you kindly.

The biggest problem I see is that Windows only supports use of one calling
card at a time. You can configure as many as you want, but to change, you
need to go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modem and manually change the
selection. You can't assign a particular card to an Outlook Contact. If
you check in CP you'll see what I'm referring to and what the options are.

You can select a card when you dial by clicking the contact's Auto-Dial ->
Dialing Properties -> Edit. By the time you go through this process, you
could have dialed the number twice.

As for dialing from Outlook, you need a modem with a connection for a phone.
Take the phone off the hook and hit the autodial button on the contact's
toolbar to dial the number.

There may be 3rd party software that facilitates this.

it would be an insane way to do it but you could build a www.asterisk.org
server just for that purpose.

like I said, kind of dumb for one user (though easy to force all calls via
the same calling card rules) but it would do it for you.

you would also have the ability to make tapi calls directly from Outlook.

Dean
p.s. not sure what this has to do with sbs though.

Thank you for your kind information. Would anyone be able to suggest any
third party software that could do the job.

Calling from Outlook directly would require you to either use a handset
attached to a modem attached to the PC or alternatively via some
TAPI-compliant telephone/system. Haven't used calling cards so couldn't
comment on that side of things.

asterisk uses outlook tapi so that you can nominate any handset (either sip
or zap)

Cheers,
