We have 2 Office 2003 Service Pack 2 updates on our WSUS server and both say
they have expired and cannot be approved for installation or detection.

Is this right?

This has happened twice with Office 2003 SP2. The first time there was
another update that superceded it, but not this time. I would like to know
what is going on with that particular update and find out if they are going
to publish an update that will stay around for awhile.

At the moment we are not distributing Office 2003 SP2 at all because we don't
have an update we can approve.

The only interesting bit in that statement is 'we have decided not to
distribute Office 2003 SP2 to users whose AutoUpdate client connects to
Microsoft Update'. But this is not applicable as our AutoUpdate clients
connect to our WSUS server, isn't that the point of WSUS?

Andrew, the specific issue revolves around whether the update can be
installed in an unattended mode. Because of the complications with Local
Installation Sources, it was decided to 'unpublish' the Office SP2 for AU
clients accessing Microsoft Update. Primarily this affects consumers who may
not have the awareness of the LIS issue, and as a result, was no doubt
creating a significant drain on PSS resources.

As for WUA/WSUS users, obviously there's still the issue that unattended
installations can be problematic. but the idea is that WSUS Administrators
probably have a bit more sophistication about this issue, and they can deal
with it internally as appropriate.

The only thing that changed was the publication points. The content is
unchanged, and if your clients have already successfully installed Office
2003 SP2, there is no reason to take any further action.

The message was posted here as a 'informative post' to WSUS Administrators,
so that we would know a new 'revision' was coming, and specifically what
it's effect was.

Office 2003 SP2s seem to be like buses, you wait for ages for one then three
come along at once Wink
