Hi Newsgroup,

what is the best way of migrating server based user profiles to the new 2003
Server? We cannot use ADMT since there is still a NT4 BDC (holding Exchange
5.5) left.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Kind regards
Lidschi.

Hi Lidschi,

Thank you for your post.

According to my experience, this kind of issue depending on two key points:

1. What do you mean to "server based user profiles"?

a. Is it roaming profile?

b. Or it is the profile located on the server?

2. How do you migrate/upgrade the domain from NT domain to 2003 domain?

a. In-place upgrade - profiles will be retained without any change

b. ADMT migrate (it appears that you are not) - profiles need to be
migrated with ADMT

c. Use a purely new domain. - roaming profiles can be copied over
directly

Basically, if you are referring to moving the roaming profiles on the
server, you can just simply copy then to the new location and the
reconfigure them. As you are not using ADMT to migrate, I am not clear
about how you migrate this domain. If you are using In-place upgrade, the
profiles can be retained. You can let me know your migration strategy so I
can help further to see if there is anything I can do for you.

I hope this addresses your questions. If anything is unclear, please feel
free to let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Eric,

1. The profiles are located on the server. With logging on to the domain the
user gets his profile copied from the Server to his local machine.
2. We got the old NT4 Server and the new 2003 Server. We installed NT4 on
the 2003 machine and made it BDC to the NT4 PDC. Then we upgraded the 2003
machine to 2003 Server OS PDC.
2a. Since the domain is not in native mode (and can't be because of the NT4
BDC Exchange 5.5 Server) I did understand from Steven Liu that I cannot use
ADMT.
3. The actual path tpo the user profile can be found in the User account on
Active Directory. What is left, as I understand, is to copy the share with
the profile from the old Server to the new Server and change the Path in
Active directory. Since this would be quite some work - is there a way to
automate these tasks?
4. I see in AD that the user has to change his password next time he logs on
to the new 2003 domain (that has the same name as the old NT4 domain). Is
there a way to uncheck this option for all users at once.

Kind regards
Lidschi.
