Post subject: NT SBS to Windows 2003
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>migration (more info?)

I have an environment with a single NT SBS server which is
my PDC and currently a 2003 member server, no BDC. I
tried to upgrade my NT SBS PDC to 2003 standard server
with Active Directory and when running the compatiblility
test, I get a message saying this version of windows
cannot be upgraded.

I currently use none of the features of SBS. Should of
purchased standard NT server at the time but what's done
is done.

We are on a network with our Parent Company. They have
assigned to me a user ID in their Active Directory and
assigned a domain name which is the same domain name we
use now on our NT SBS server. They have also given me DNS
and WINS IP addresses to use.

It will be painful to change the Domain name, I'd rather
only do that as a last resort. What is my best upgrade
path at this point to Active Directory considering my PDC
cannot be upgraded and will require a fresh install? Keep
in mind I do have a brand new 2003 server I can use as
well if that can make this process easier. We have 35
users on our Domain so it would not be devastating to
rekey in all of the user accounts but I wouldn't want to
have to rebuild all the permissions on individual files
and folders if can be avoided.

Hello John,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

SBS is a different product from Windows. It seems the Windows 2003 Upgrade
path cannot meet your requirement, thus I recommend you submit a post to
SBS newsgroup:

microsoft.private.directaccess.smallbizserver

Hope this helps!

John,

Another way to tackle this would be to in-place upgrade the SBS 4.5 box to
SBS 2000 or SBS 2003. Then at that point you're running AD, and could
DCPromo another machine into the domain. I believe SBS 2000 and 2003 will
allow you to do that.

Or, alternatively, you could upgrade to SBS 2000 or 2003 the use the
"unlock" key. I believe in 2000 it was called the migration pack.

I think you will find this to be much easier.
