Does anyone know of a good migration tool to assist in the migration of Netware (mix of versions 3.x and 4.x) to Windows NT4? This seems pretty straight forward, but the catch is my client has a mature Netware environment and Windows NT4 environment already. I'm afraid that tools like MS Services for Netware will move user/group accounts and overwrite the existing NT4 accounts of the same name, and then the current permissions to files/folders in the NT4 environment will be lost.
Is the only choice to do this the hard way, and manually move Netware files/volumes to an NT4 server, set up permissions for the existing NT accounts to those files/volumes?

Thanks,

Matt Mensching

It appears article 186874 touches on my concern a little. It mentions that NWConv can be used to migrate Netware users that already exist in Windows NT, but I need to know what happens to the NT accounts when this is performed. Is there an option to NOT overwrite the NT accounts, but instead to merge the accounts, so I can then use the tool to move Netware files over to Windows NT and access permissions will be maintained with users only using the NT account?

If NWConv is capable of this, does it also work with Netware 5.x and 6.x ?
If NWConv is capable of this, but does not work with Netware 5.x and 6.x can I use Microsoft Services for Netware v.5 to perform the same task?

Any guidance you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Hi Matt,

During migration, the Usernames and Group Names tabs each contain options
for handling duplicate NetWare and user and group names. Both sections let
you log the error, ignore the duplicate name, or add a prefix of your
choice. Only with usernames can you choose to overwrite existing NT
accounts with the new NetWare information. If errors occur during the
migration, Migration Tool for NetWare will write them to the Error.LOG
file.

As I know, NWConv works with Netware 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x but I have not
checked if it works with Netware 5.x and 6.x. This utility is designed
around 7 years ago and I am not sure if it supports a later Netware
version. You can back up your system, add a test Windows NT server and then
perform the test to see if it works correctly.

Please feel free to let me know if you experience any problems. I look
forward to hearing from you.

I checked out the options in NWConv and it looks like this will not do what I need it to do. I need the Netware and NT accounts to be merged, not overwritten. I will have to find another tool. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Matt Mensching

Do you know of a tool that exists which can merge 2 Windows NT4 user accounts into 1?
I could use NWConv to get the Netware accounts over, but essentially there will then be 2 NT accounts for the same person (because my client's Netware environment is a user domain and so is their NT4 domain).

Thanks,

I have figured out a solution! The tool that can merge NT accounts together (with the help of a new W2k Native Mode domain) is Clonepr and SIDHist.vbs (From the W2k Resource Kit).

My last hurtle is to figure out how to get the computer accounts migrated because clonepr does not do computer accounts.

Excellent thought, thank you. I will incorporate ADMT v2. I actually just used that tool in a lab scenario a few weeks ago.
I think I only have 2 hurdles left:
- Moving the Netware printers (may have to be done manually - I am thinking of setting up a Windows 2000 print server in parallel and changing the user's printer through a VB script).
- Getting info from Netware 5.x (I will have to do some testing to see if NWConv can handle this)

Thanks again for your suggestions and I will keep you posted on my progress.

Do you know of any VB scripts or tools that can pull out someone's domain password in an NT4 domain?

Thanks,

Hi Matt,

Sorry, we don't have such tool which can pull out the password.

You known, the password is encrypted in the system. I don't think it can be
pull out.

Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!
