Post subject: Make available offline
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>sbs (more info?)

I have an SBS 2003 domain and I have created several Shares on the server. I
am not redirecting the My Documents Folder (for reasons outside the scope of
this post). I have three mapped drives on the workstations to three shares.
One of these mapped drives has "Make available offlone" checked and greyed
out. It also has the redirected symbol. The other mapped drives do not have
the "Make available offline" checked. I have checked all the settings I can
think of on the server and I don't see why this one share is redirecting.
Ultimately I don't want to redirect any of these shares but I do want to
understand why this one share is acting like it is being handled by a GPO.
Any help?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: the one shared folder
has been checked the "Make available offline" option and grayed out, but
you don't enable folder redirection in GPO. If I am off base, please feel
free to let me know.

Windows XP make the redirected folder as offline folder by default. For
example, if you redirect My Documents folder to a server share, this folder
is automatically made to be offline. That is explains the why the "Make
Available Offline" menu is grayed out.

Please turn off the group policy in order not to automatically make the
redirect folder to be offline by using the following steps:

1. Bring up the local group policy by keying in "gpedit.msc" in Run box.

2. Locate to the following policy:

User configuration\Administrative templates
Network\Offline files

Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline

3. Enable this policy to prevent My Documents to be an offline folder and
you then can make the needed folder offline.

Any update, let us get in touch.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu

Steven, I've taken those steps on our machines, but the problem I'm having is
I'm still unable to access the "Make Available Offline" option on individual
files. I've redirected "My Documents" to a server share.

What I'm trying to do is have the ability to exclude certain folders within
"My Documents" like "My Music, My Pictures, My Videos", etc.

What's happening?
