Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>migration (more info?)

Hi

i'm just in the middle of starting from scratch again..! Sad

i want to perform my migration using the technique outlined by Rebbeca Chen
:-
--------------------------------------------------------------
1. Run Adprep /forestprep, Adprep /domainprep on win2k DC.
2. Install win2k3 on your new machine and join it to the win2k
domain.
3. Promote win2k3 to be a backup DC. This process will replicate
user/computer accounts from 2k to 2k3.
4. Install AD-integrated DNS on 2k3, this process will auto
replicate DNS from 2k to 2k3.

5. Move Global Catalog
6. Switch FSMO Roles to new server.
7. Add DHCP role .Refer to the following KB:
-------------------------------------------------------------

I want to use win2k3 Small Business Server as my new PDC

I'm having trouble performing Step 2.

the fist time round, i tried giving the same domain.local setting, and a
different server name but the wizard refused this. so i gave a new
domain.local name and server name. This worked. i couldn't find any options
to change to a BDC (and didn't expect to). i ran the dcpromo command, and
tried the last domain controler in list option. i couldn't successfully
complete this option as AD couldn't be removed. i'm sure all these error
directly relate to me not performing Step 2.

so my question.. how do i join win2k3 SBS to a win2k domain??

also, does anyone know how to perform Steps 5 and 6

Thanks

Jado

Well, depending upon what he *has* done, it *is* possible to join an
existing domain. Are you strictly following the article below;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453

Yes. This is correct as describe in the KB above. The "integrated setup" has
*no* provision for installing into an existing domain. You *must* follow the
KB *to the letter*.

If not followed, you'd have to backup and 'undo' the SBS install and perhaps
remove changes to the existing AD, again depending upon what *was* done.

Dear Jeff,

Thanks for your post and thanks Kevin for the information sharing.

I agree Kevin's comments on this issue.

The steps of installing Small Business Server 2003 in an existing Active
Directory domain are described in the following KB article:

How to install Small Business Server 2003 in an existing Active Directory
domain
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453

Please strictly follow the above KB when performing the installation.
Otherwise, you might have problem joining the SBS 2003 computer to the
existing domain.

If you meet any installation related issues, I suggest you opening a new
post in the below SBS newsgroup queues:

microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

Please note, the microsoft.public.windows.server.migration newsgroup mainly
focus on the migration of Windows Server products. We are not best support
resource for SBS related issues. The engineers and newsgroup members in
SBS newsgroup queues are more experienced on SBS-related issues, and should
be able to provide you with suggestions on these kinds of issues.
