Post subject: Update KB917013 - Windows Desktop Search 3.01
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>update_services (more info?)

We noticed that this update "Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows
XP (KB917013) was being installed on client machines in our network.
Since we have a scheduled day for reviewing and approving update for
deployment, we know that no one approved this update. The previous
version, "Windows Desktop Search 2.6.6 (KB926356)" had been declined
as we have legitimate reasons for not wanting this software on our
systems.

Looking at the release date of 10/23/2007 for this update tells us
that this is being pushed out without the opportunity to first review
and test an update - which was kind of the point of implementing WSUS
in the first place. Also, the update does not support removal.
Great.

Anyone else see this problem?

Microsoft, what the hell are you thinking? No update should be
automatically deployed in WSUS without approval - period.

See my previous post. Others are experiencing the same thing.

It does not support removal from WSUS.

We pushed out a script that removes the shortcut from All Users startup,
stops the service and disables it.

It still leaves the Windows Search Deskbar active until a restart.

Bummer....

Same thing here. This is getting more infuriating by the moment. I have
not approved any updates in a couple of weeks either and the KB article
shows that this has just been issued in the latest round.

In the past I have complained about mischaracterizations of "critical"
updates in the past just to get us to approve them, but now forcing them on
us without our permission is unacceptable, especially since this is just a
stupid little gadget that no one on a well designed network should care
about because all the important data should be on the network servers that
get backed up.

We are in the same boat.

Out of curiosity, how are you pushing this script to your clients?
Login script or ... ?

We use ZENworks. I think we will also push this script with either /quiet
or /passive:

%WINDIR%\$NtUninstallKB917013$\spuninst\spuninst /passive /norestart

It uninstalls WDS and doesn't restart.

*sigh*

Pretty frickin pissed here *AND* we've had help desk calls because of
this so it's costing money too.

Kinda surprised this hasn't hit The Inq yet...maybe someone stuffed a
marketing droid down in front of the WSUS META console at vole central.

I've been researching some this afternoon and I think if Internet
Explorer, Outlook, Outlook Express, and all explorer.exe processes are
unloaded then you don't need to worry about a reboot. Whether you can
get away with a shell restart I don't know.

I haven't yet figured out how to script removal of the toolbar....

Where the hell is MS on this one? No comment? Do you have any idea what
you've done to admins everywhere? This is nuts! Someone from MS needs to get
on here right away and tell us what happened, and why. And give a good idea
of how to undo it.

Hi Tom,

Using the same script but on reboot the windows update comes up asking for
the update to be installed again. Have you gotten around this issue.

Anything you come up with would be useful.

Uninstalling this way works ok, but after rebooting the clients get a
popup saying a new update is ready for install... Guess which update
that is... Seems that even though the update is declined in WSUS,
Microsoft still pushes it out to the client...

Hi Allan,

Have you been able to find a fix to prevent the reinstallation of this
annoyance, that is being a right pain in the rear.

Thanks

Yes, I unapproved the update on the WSUS server. After the machines check
in again, the update is found to be not approved and it stops trying to
install it.

Yesterday I had 2100+ machines with it installed and today I have 552.

When you can't beat the competition by having a better product, then beat
them by forcing your product on everyone so they don't need a competing
product... or think they don't.

And I bet this is based on Windows Live search.. which is worse than it's
predecessor, Windows Search.

What we have had to do is to visit each computer, disable the Windows Update
Service and empty the SoftwareDsitribution folder, then re-enable the update
folder. Then uninstall Windows Desktop Search from Add/Remove Programs and
once it reboots, it doesn't come back.
