I haven't used the tool myself, but it seems like it would do the trick. The
program has some caveats though:
The Visio network diagram generated by the Inventory Wizard displays a
limited summary of the environment. The full details from inventory are shown
in the Proposal document generated using the Proposal Wizard. Note the
following Visio diagram limitations:
The Visio can only display up to 5 subnets.
The Visio can only display up to 48 device, printer, and computer icons.
Windows NT 4.0 computers cannot be inventoried.
There are also some other freeware utilities out there that I have used.
Spiceworks and Ilient are two that I've used before. Spiceworks is designed
mostly for asset tracking (hardware and software) and can query objects using
WMI to get an up-to-date description. Ilient is more of a asset tracking and
helpdesk utility. It works just as well as Spiceworks, but if you don't need
the helpdesk stuff, I wouldn't bother with it.
If I were you, I'd try them all out and see what best fits for your company
and network. Hope this helps... Cheerio!
