Hello, I have an online biz that I currently run out of my home. I plan on
opening up my first store front in April. In order to prepare for this
venture I have purchased SBS 2003 to put on my new computer. I HAD win XP
home addition which worked fine but I new that the features in SBS 2003 would
be better. It turned out not to be able to upgrade from XP so it deleted XP.
But now that SBS 2003 is installed I cannot:
1. install any of my printers
2. install any of my MCFEE virus software
3. my computer does not recognize any of the installed drivers for sound or
my dual moniter card from ATI
-My software and printer error states that they are for win 2000, ME & XP.
And will not work on this system. HELP! Is there any way that I can have XP
running in the background with the SBS software? As you can probably tell, I
am new to servers. I currently need to print out customer receipts but
can't. Please help! Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. >> Stay informed about: Help! I'm new and have many questions! |

Making a server out of desktop hardware puts you on shaky ground which you
have already discovered! And it sounds like you want to use it as a desktop
even if you were able to get the server software installed which is not good
either. I understand that this is for a home business and that may remove
some of the security issues of having someone using the server to work on
but you will still want to browse the web with something. If you have made a
server out of your desktop and you have no other PC you will be using the
"server".....and that opens you up to security problems too. It also sounds
like you are planning to host a public web site from your SBS and that is
another security risk that you are opening your server up to. I would also
assume that your desktop does not have any form of RAID configuration which
makes the possibility of more problems down the road.
I know this post has been nothing but negative but as others post on this
topic you will most likely find more things that I haven't mentioned with
trying to make a server out of desktop hardware.

Thanks Jeff. I really appreciate your help. I currently have two laptops
also. In an attemp to grow my biz, I have began to travel alot for
advertising. The problem was that I could not acquire items such as
documents from my home computer while traveling. So a friend (information
management) convinced me that SBS 2003 would be a great investment presently
and in the future. So I went to EBay and bought it, after I did some
research. It seemed like the perfect solution. Print and access documents
remotely. Great. My website will continue to be hosted on either BCentral or
Godaddy. I just wish that I could get my printers, sound and anti-virus
software to work properly. I paid alot of money for the dual ATI monitor
card. LOL. I have just downloaded the SBS 2003 guide so that I can learn
more about it. I just hope its not too late. LOL. Thanks Jeff for your
honesty.

I think you seriously need to read up on SBS. I would reinstall XP and
continue what you were doing while learning about SBS. There is a load of
information on the MS site.
To answer your question, no, you can't run XP and SBS "in the background".

I appreciate your not taking the comments personally. One problem with a NG
form of communication is you can't hear the tone in which people are
speaking or see their faces as they speak.....are they reaming me out, are
the making fun of what I'm trying to do or do they think I'm crazy for
trying to do a certain thing? None of the above are true for me anyway and
I'm sure that applies to most everyone here as well. Not being honest with
answering your questions or mentioning the drawbacks in what you were
planning to do would be a disservice to you and I know that I have
appreciated the honesty of many here at this NG with my questions.
You mentioned that you were not able to install your virus software. Am I
assuming correctly that this was on your XP machine previously? If so it is
not going to work with SBS. It's just not made for a server environment. You
also mentioned sound drivers. I'm not sure if SBS even supports sound since
it's not normally used in a Desktop situation. Most people only spend time
setting in front of their actual server doing major Service Pack updates so
a high end sound card and video card are not needed. As for the printer
errors you've answered that problem yourself. The drivers and software are
not for Win2003 server environment.
After all is said and done it "may" have been better to upgrade to XP Pro
and used the Remote Desktop feature to gain access to your files and to
print. I've not done that over the Internet but have done it on my LAN and
it works well.
Hopefully you can get things sorted out after learning more about how a
server environment works and what it takes to set everything up.
Thanks
Jeff

I'll take a slightly different tack to that of Claus and Jeff.
A server is a server, not a workstation. To install a server OS you need:
one set of hardware which will operate as the server AND
another set to operate as a client to that server.
This is not SBS specific.
Telling us you cannot 'install any of my printers' is absolutely useless.
What sort of printer are you trying to install?
How is it connected to the server?
At what point does installation fail and what, if any, error is generated?
Are Windows 2003 drivers available for the printer?
Telling us you cannot 'install any of my MCFEE virus software' is absolutely
useless.
WHAT, you have 37 versions of stand-alone and network McAfee and you've
tried them all, yet none work? Again, be a little specific.
'I have the standard McAfee AV for workstations and cannot install it to
SBS, what do I do?' (shell out for a server version) OR
'I am trying to install McAfee AV for Network, Version 13226543, and when it
gets to _this point_ of the installation it errors in _this manner_'
We may then be able to tell you why. (The most obvious answer being that
McAfee is a POS [personal opinion])
What sort of sound card? Though I agree with other comments that sound is
unnecessary on a server I've thrown a lot of soundcards (or embedded sound)
at W2k3 and had very little bother with any of them. Again, are 2k3 drivers
available? if not I'd suggest W2k drivers rather than XP drivers (having
attempted them and had them fail).
Similar for your video card.
If you help us we'll help you. Be as specific as you can. Threads are cheap,
start several of them addressing each issue individually. Take a step back
and say 'OK, I've gotta explain this to someone who knows _nothing_ about
what I am attempting to do'.
again, nothing so far is SBS specific. It sounds like you are having
problems related to W2k3 on your hardware. What's the hardware?

I guess my point was more that it sounded like this was going to be used for
Desktop (dual monitor & Sound) as well as a Server and was under the
impression that was not a good thing to do. Do you have an opinion on that
SuperGumby? I choose not to use my server as a desktop but maybe it is OK in
certain situations!
Thanks
Jeff

A server is a server, not a workstation.
So yes, you've found one of the things I have an opinion about. (LIKE that's
_really_ difficult
To use a server as a workstation you probably need a whole lot of stuff
installed that is undesirable on a server.
If you have Exchange installed there is a good reason not to also install
Outlook, it often works but may result in neither working.
To use the server as a WS you are probably going to remove IE Enhanced
Security and then visit sites susceptible to attack.
We then start to move into SBS specific territory.
SBS is busy, busy maintaining your mail system, sharepoint, being your
firewall (in any 2 NIC scenario), monitoring itself, running your network
AV. Most modern systems have plenty of CPU left but RAM and HDD IO is
normally busy, the system is also 'tuned' to prioritise these services,
running applications does not give the best performance of the apps and
degrades the performance of the services.
and then there's security.
The priveleges of a standard user in an SBS environment must be elevated for
that user to get full functionality if running apps on the server. A user on
the server, or an exploit brought in by their activity, is more likely to
result in problems.
and it can all be avoided by spending a few hundred dollars on a
workstation. This cost will be much less than the eventual cost of running
the server as a ws.

That is my opinion as well. Although many things may be similar to a desktop
on a server it has a different job to do from a desktop. Well........now
that we have voiced our "opinions" don't we all feel better??

Bear, I am having the same problem. Any hardware I try to install that has a
driver, which is all of them, will not install. Even hardware that was
previously installed does not work if I take the ups connection cord out and
try to plug it back in. I am asked to reinstall the hardware and it will go
through its cycle and say that my hardware cannot be installed. Or that it
could not find my driver.
Also, every time I boot up, I am asked to install the same updates that I
have been installing everyday for about a week.
Anyone else like Bear and I?

What message of Bear are you replying to? We'd like to help with your
problems, but we need a lot more info about your setup and configuration. If
this is indeed an SBS 2003 server please start by running the SBS Best
Practices Analyzer and let us know if it finds any issues needing
correction.

If Bear (or anyone else) posts with LiveMail or Windows Mail, and has
community features turned on (the default), we won't be able to see their
post if we're using NNTP readers with this newsgroup. Microsoft currently
has major issues with the community features and hasn't, yet, found a
solution. It's frustrating in the extreme.
