Has any one used DPM to backup a remote SBS box? Either way wat were some of
the issues that you ran into? I know DPM it self cannot be ran on a Domain
controller so the application would need to be on a member server.

I looked into DPM quite extensively. It's lacking 3 features I want (native
Exchange, native SQL, bare metal restore), so I didn't end up pulling the
trigger. However, I've seen it run and it's pretty awesome - I met a guy
from the DPM team at MS who was running it successfully on a laptop. For
data backup, it's very simple and seems to work great - user restore is a
big plus (it's like shadow copy on steroids). The basic license includes
the ability to back up 3 servers, but as you say, DPM is intended to be run
on its own box.

You can do NT backups of Exchange and SQL to flat files on the SBS, then use
DPM to backup those files. I'm not crazy about that idea personally, but
it's a workaround.

I'm not sure if you can run DPM on Windows Storage Server, but that would be
another plus - you could get a network-attached, dedicated server for DPM.
That might be worth looking into if you're interested.

I just had an SBS server go south and was using DPM to protect 3 other
servers in my network. Seems I found the chink in it's armor. Since the SBS
box was the DNS and AD system DPM wont let me restore any files it has even
on the other servers it was paired with..... So despite my layered backup and
redundant storage... I'm unable to get my data off this box..... Would be
nice if Microsoft gave DPM the ability to export/dump files to a local folder
as needed, instead of only transfering them to a DPM share......

My advice, it is a nice shadow copy repository, but certainly not a
replacement for a real backup solution.

Anyone know of a forum like this for DPM.......

When you have an AD integrated backup... have a secondary DC.

Ping me and I can ping you up with Mark Crall for some info to get this
back.
