If I convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk will I cause any problems for
the data and OS on it?

It shouldn't. Still, it is recommended that you do backup before you do the
conversion.

What will you use dynamic disks for?

Need to extend the current (hardware) array and so have created another
(hardware) array. Just need to convert the existing disk to dynamic so I
can extend it onto the new disks.

From the back of my mind, if i'm not wrong, an OS partition (dynamic) cannot
be extended.
If you want to mirror it, can.

Convert basic disk to dynamic will not lose data and can be realized by the disk management.
But if http://www.dynamic-disk.com/convert-dynamic-disk-to-basic.html (convert dynamic disk to basic disk) will lose all data on the dynamic volumes, so, you should take care of it. Very Happy

Hi,
Microsoft Windows Vista is the latest version of Windows operating system. It includes a number of added and advanced features and one such feature is support to Dynamic Disk volumes. Vista supports the Dynamic Disk volumes for its Ultimate, Enterprise and Business editions. You can easily convert a basic disk to dynamic disk using 'Convert to Dynamic Disk' option from the Disk Management.

However, when you convert a dynamic disk back to basic disk, it is not usual and requires hard drive formatting. Formatting removes all of your hard drive partitions and cause critical partition loss situations. In order to overcome this issue, you are required to opt for Partition Recovery solutions.
Thanks.
