OK folks
There is an answer to this one, which I will post up in full. It turns
out it is quite straightforward in the end.
I contacted Symantec on hte number above (thanks Russell) but they
directed me to contact Dell as the product is installed on a new Dell
PowerEdge server. Dell technician said it was a permissions-related
problem and yet I had checked all of the username, password and domain
credentials over and over.
Finally my colleague here spotted the problem. At some point or
another we had managed to place hte built-in administrator account in
REMOTE OPERATORS SECURITY GROUP. Membership of this group means that
many other administrative permissions are cancelled out, and therefore
no rights to log on to the server using the administrator credentials
in Veritas.
Remove administrator from Remote Operators and you can now connect to
the server and configure/run backup jobs.
For the record the error when logging onto console was this: "The
local policy of this system does not permit you to logon
interactively".
