I am still on WSUS 2, and have been having a strange issue. Over the last 6-7
months computers are arbitrarily showing up as 'unassigned', although when I
look in the groups they appear, albeit with a warning that they havent
reported status in X days. I use group policy for the updates and i've not
seen this happen until recently. Any help appreciated.

This typically happens when a machine is reinstalled, although there might be
other circumstances that trigger the same behaviour. The newly-installed OS
creates a new WSUS entry for itself in the unassigned group; the entry in the
correct group represents the old installation of the OS which no longer exists.

If the machines are not being reinstalled, is there anything which might be
messing with the registry entries relating to WSUS, or changing the SID on the
machines? If you can narrow down the period in which this took place on one of
the clients you could also look for clues in WindowsUpdate.log.

Harry.

Hi Harry -

No, the machines are set, no OS reinstalls or anything like that, it's quite
random, but I will check the logs like you say and hope I can find the errors
- thanks for the help!
