Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>server>setup (more info?)

I have a Dell PowerEdge that has an OEM install of Windows Server 2003. I
purchased an Open License for Server 2003 R2, along with the Volume License
Key media. I got the Volume License Product Key from the eOpen website, and
have since been given another one from the VLK phone support. Neither key
works -- it just says they're invalid. MVLS Help is referring me to the
Volume License call center, which just pushes me towards calling Tech Support
and shelling out $245 for the call, which just isn't right. No one can give
me a straight answer as to whether or not this will work.

The server is a production fileserver (I want to use the new DFS replication
engine), so I'm really not willing to reinstall the server just because
Microsoft Licensing is evil. Since I've purchased a full license for R2, any
restriction preventing me from applying the VLK'd R2 to the OEM SP1 install
is artifical and unfair.

Can anyone please help?!?

in order to use VL key with your server, you need to get VLK edition or the
server.....

I know this is an old post, but I'm in a similar situation and was curious as
to how this worked out for you-any issues with the upgrade?
