I think that this prooves to us all how important these Newsgroups and
knowledge sharing is.

I only chased it for about 2 hours this afternoon, but with 20 users sitting
around on
their hands (this was after an unplanned shutdown of the server).
Thanks so much for posting.

All,

I experienced this problem as well, at one point I had 600 users down
until I found this post and realised what was causing the issue. Are
any of you considering taking legal action as a result of this?

I feel that had APC tested the app after 27th July 2005 (e.g. rolled
the date forward in their test environment) they would have seen the
problems that their software caused to Servers and tried to make people
more aware of the issue.

I agree. I am a consultant and have many clients with SBS and APC. I got call
from all of them on teh same day and went crazy. Some one should be held
accountable. However at one cleint even after uninstalling APC I still
havenot been able to resolve the issue. At other clients it was fine. Any
ideas of what could be still causing it.

Great answer. Right on the money!
I wish that I had this answer last Thursday when I had this problem. We
spent 23 hours reloading the SBS 2003 server and migrating all of the
users over to the new domain. So is it Sun's fault or American
Power/APC's fault???

Apparently there was an email notification ahead of time.

You remember the Trend issue don't you?

Cost more in Attorneys fees.

If I may be mean?

Why in the world did you not call PSS? They knew it...we knew it and
were later on in the day swapping emails with them about it.

How about not getting help when you need it, fault?

But you're missing the point. Sure, the issue only shows up on a SP1
applied system, but the actual cause of the software failure is APC's
fault, not Microsoft's SP1 patch.

So even if you had tested the SP1 rollout...the bug wouldn't have shown
up until last wednesday!

While all of the blame gets thrown around, I just wanted to thank the forum
users who made us aware of the issue and how to fix it.
And although I received email notification of the expiration, there was no
mention of it's full impact on the operating system, or how to resolve the
issue in the event that an upgrade was not performed before the expiration
date.
It merely states,
"Failure to upgrade will render PowerChute Business Edition inoperable."

Lessons learned: 1. Read your email, and upgrade before the expiration date.
2. Check forums before trying to blindly tackle the issue.

I don't they APC knew it was going to do this to be honest with you.

Ergo...the bigger issue here.

Anyone would have missed it, it's a date-bomb in the program! You're
telling me that your testing plan includes setting the data forward X
number of days / months???

Our SP1 testing plan included testing all installed applications, and
the APC services and application worked fine up until last wednesday
night.

Microsoft PSS doesn't have a web site... it's this newsgroup.. and
besides it was an issue with APC, not Microsoft products.

Do you remember the Sharepoint issue.. we had official notification in
the SBS newsgroups when it was a Microsoft issue.

This was APC.

If you are a Microsoft Partner you have business down and support
options... use them.

PSS was supposed to post on Trend issues when Trend's dat file nailed my
server?

This is a bit ridiculous of a request in my opinion. Use the power of
the community but don't expect PSS to be putting out notifications on
the fly for third party software, me thinks.
