After rebooting a server that has just 5 clients connected to it, the server
came up,
quickly did preparing network connections and then hung at applying computer
settings for over 2 hours. Then when presented with the ctrl+alt+del, I log
in and
it did applying computer settings again for another 30 min.
All services seem to have fired up as normal and there are no entries in the
event
log that would make me think anything was wrong. Exchange server runs on
this server and all email services are working as expected.
Another odd thing is that when I know launch internet explorer and try to go
to a website, it doesn't even appear to be trying to resolve the address.
Please help....and thank you in advance for your help! >> Stay informed about: Windows 2003 SBS Hangs on "Applying computer Settings" |

DNS is all setup to point to the internal AD directory server. Also...before
rebooting everything was working fine. Another thing I just found is that
printing jobs that map to a sharred printer shard off this server are also
not printing.
My hunch is that there is something wrong with active directory. How do
you repair that? Or should I even waste my time with that?

Okay after the first response from Matt, I went to launch network connections
to confirm my dns settings and I cannot launch anything under control panel.
Help...this seems to be a bigger problem than I initially thought.

What caused you to reboot your server. I am having similar problems after
rebooting from a WIndows INstaller 3.1 v2.

Occaisionally outbound email will get delayed in our exchange server and that's
the quickets fix. However, like I said...even when waiting for the applying
computer settings process...email functions normally. After getting to
a desktop now, it seems I can't go into network properties, print jobs
are not working, and internet explorer doesn't work. All else seems to
function as it
should.

Something strange has defintiely just happened. There seems to be having
similar symptoms. A helpful response from Microsoft would be very nice. In
my case...I sound fortunate that I'm still able to access resources located
on the server.

Our computer service company has had 2 customers with this issue today.
I find it odd that so many are having this development today. The
common thread seems to be Server 2k3 and June 28, 2005.
In the case I'm working on, I'm seeing the hanging on "applying
computer settings". I haven't been patient enough, I suppose, to wait
2-3 hours for the logon.
This is an SQL server, and also printer server. It also is the primary
DNS server for the workstations.
DNS on the workstations is still resolving.
Shares and applications are still accessible.
The print serving is down, though.
I'm curious to see what would happen if I set the date to yesterday via
the BIOS. I'm hoping this is not a time-delayed virus or some such.
I'm on hold with MS business down support as I type this. They
estimate over an hour before I will get to talk to someone--and usually
a critical call is answered much faster.
This makes me think something is seriously wrong with a LOT of systems.
Anyway, I thought I would chime in with a "me too". We've had 2
different customers call us with this issue today, and since shares and
services seem to be working, it's possible that many more are affected
and don't know it yet. >> Stay informed about: Windows 2003 SBS Hangs on "Applying computer Settings" |

Your wild guess was quite accurate in my case. Wish you had posted
this about 4 hours earlier!
Anyway, my quick fix for this was to disable two services:
APC PBE Server
APC PBE Agent
Everything was back to normal. Wierd stuff. >> Stay informed about: Windows 2003 SBS Hangs on "Applying computer Settings" |

I was just about to post this as well. I called Microsoft and this is a
reported problem that has just surfaced for anyone that rebooted in the last
couple days. This indeed solved my problem as well. Sorry for not getting
it sooner!
Also...anyone with this problem, contact APC and make them aware so that
they work on the problem together with Microsoft.

It sounded all too familiar, and the date coincided with the powerchute
issue. Glad the pointer was accurate - and yeah, too bad I hadn't looked at
the newsgroups until the end of day!
I wouldn't stop at disabling the services, of course. uninstall, restart,
and get the current version for your server.
Cheers,
Jason

I just stumbled across this. I had restarted a server this morning,
having it to stay in the "applying computer settings" state for several
hours.
After that, the system had no Internet access (proxy) and the VPN's
down.
I did receive some days a ago some warning about APC and now I begin to
place the pieces of the puzzle together. The system's got an APC UPS
connected and that most probably is the problem why the system's so
heavily choking.
Anyways, it's not bad after all as this may lead to a customer saying
farewell to SBS 2003.
There are more problems, like all over sudden after a few days no TCP
stack response anymore (ok, very slow, like 15 minutes before SMTP
hello is given) -- the screen is grey and the mouse pointer moves but
that's it... it seems that SP1 *may* fix this but we're afraid
thesystem will be even more botched then. >> Stay informed about: Windows 2003 SBS Hangs on "Applying computer Settings" |

I Have been chasing this problem for three days checked the newsgroups
on wednesday and only a couple of posts; I chewed the Office manager from one
end of the Office to the Other, good resolution. Since we have a resolution
all is Great lets all just be happy we didn't have to pour 15-20 hours into
rebuilding a server and recovering data but I that APC could be held
responcible they have my account on file and no notification; this will cost
american business millions of dollars. I'm getting tired of lack of
responcibilty.
I'm just glad no more problems.
